November 24th…. an award ceremony those present will never forget.
It was the day after we saw the awful scenes on the streets of our capital city in November……school students in Naas CBS were getting on a bus to come to Maynooth University to celebrate their Champion School of Sanctuary award, friends of Schools of Sanctuary were coming from various parts of Leinster to celebrate with them. And we were all in total shock.
The young men representing Naas CBS listened with incredible maturity and compassion to the serious and emotional sentiments that were shared by various speakers.
In particular, a treasured Sanctuary Ambassador, Kinda Nassli (who was part of Naas CBS’ monitoring team back in May) opened her heart in her address and spoke about how much uplifted from her fear and sadness she left by being in a room with young people like the students of Naas CBS, who she believes can make the world a kinder, fairer, safer and more welcoming place.
We give huge thanks to teachers Ms Ward and Ms Prendiville who prepared and supported the Naas CBS students in their truly brilliant and mature presentation, in which they showcased their school’s Sanctuary work.
Thanks also to our great friends and Sanctuary allies in Maynooth University (especially Aoife Titley, co-chair of the MU Sanctuary Committee) and to our board members (Tonye Benson Olatunde and Kevin Mascarenhas) for making the event feel as special as it deserved to be for this fantastic school, the first Champion School of Sanctuary in Co. Kildare!
